🧩 Who We Are

The UN Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH) is led by a Medical Director who is accountable to the Assistant Secretary-General. This Division is structured into several main sections, each with core functions. The Director coordinates the system-wide implementation of UN medical standards and health policies, serves as a medical adviser for the Advisory Board on Compensation Claims, and provides expert guidance to the UN Joint Staff Pension Board. The Division actively addresses healthcare issues at all duty stations and ensures staff access to essential benefit programs.

🌍 Our Mission

The mission of the UN Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH) is to safeguard the physical and mental health of staff worldwide, including uniformed personnel, while ensuring access to essential medical benefit programs. We achieve this by developing, reviewing, and implementing United Nations medical standards, policies, and guidelines, and ensuring their coordinated application across the system. Our Division is dedicated to fostering a healthy, safe, and compassionate work environment through comprehensive health policies, health promotion initiatives, and robust medical emergency preparedness. Our responsibilities also include providing medical clearances for recruitment and mission deployment, evaluating sick leave and related benefits globally, ensuring timely access to health services and medical evacuations, and offering direct clinical care and psychological support to staff.

Office of the Director

Provides strategic leadership and oversight for all DHMOSH functions; advises UN leadership on medical policy; ensures organizational coherence, budgetary performance, policy implementation, and representation on inter-agency governance bodies.

ABCC Advisory

Medical advisory support to the Advisory Board on Compensation Claims (ABCC), guiding the evaluation of service-related injuries, illnesses, and disability claims.

Medical Operations and MEDEVAC (MOM)

Oversight of sick leave, Medical Evacuations (MEDEVAC), child benefits, special education grants, special dependence allowance and disability entitlements, ensuring timely, compassionate, and rules-based coordination and implementation.

Medical Workforce Management & Medical Planning

Strategic management of medical workforce under ONE UN framework, oversight of recruitment, credentialing clearance, on-post training and capacity building for UN medical personnel, technical support and advice to UNDP-administered Clinics, integrated medical support planning and crisis response solutions.

Population Health Strategy and Intelligence (PHSI)

Leading DHMOSH’s strategic and population-level health initiatives. The section focuses on system-wide functions such as health promotion, communicable disease prevention, outbreak preparedness and response, and oversight of mental health programmes for peacekeepers. It integrates medical, epidemiological, and operational data to strengthen decision-making, planning, and early warning systems. Through its work in health intelligence and data analytics, PHSI supports evidence-based strategy, anticipatory risk management, and coherence across field and headquarters-level health activities.

Delivery of psychosocial care, individual counseling, trauma response, and mental health promotion for New York-based staff, through a confidential and independent support service based at UNHQ.

Crises, Major Emergencies & Disasters (CMD)

Specialized deployment unit providing rapid trauma and emergency medical response, supporting crisis events, mass casualty situations, and evacuation readiness.

UNHQ Clinic

On-site occupational health clinic at UN Headquarters in New York, offering preventive care, travel health services, immunizations, and immediate response to workplace medical needs.

Global Mental Health Programs

DHMOSH provides mental health support to UN personnel (civilian & uniformed) globally. Services include training modules, mental health tools and resources, development of field strategies for peacekeepers, and review of PTSD-related claims from Member States.
