Strengthening Aeromedical Evacuation for UN Operations

The United Nations has taken a significant step forward in strengthening aeromedical evacuation (AME) capabilities across its global missions. The recently concluded Aeromedical Evacuation Working Group has developed a comprehensive set of recommendations to support greater consistency, operational readiness and sustainability in aeromedical evacuation across complex environments.

Bringing together 47 subject matter experts from 24 UN Member States, the working group combined operational experience with technical expertise in medicine, logistics, and planning. Conducted entirely through virtual collaboration, the initiative successfully produced actionable recommendations that prioritize patient safety, clinical effectiveness and operational practicality.

At the core of the Working Group’s findings is the need for a standardized and scalable approach to AME operations. A three-person aeromedical evacuation team - comprising a specialist doctor, a critical care nurse, and a paramedic - was recommended by the working group as the minimum model for most mission scenarios. This model can be expanded depending on operational demands, ensuring flexibility in responding to diverse field conditions.

The report also highlights the importance of modularity in both team composition and equipment. Lightweight, durable, and multifunctional medical tools, organized into portable, color-coded kits, are essential to enabling rapid deployment and efficient in-flight care. Incorporating advanced technologies such as handheld ultrasound devices and portable diagnostic tools is expected to further enhance clinical capabilities in austere environments.

Standardized training and continuous learning are equally central to the new framework. The working group emphasized the need for a unified training syllabus, regular exercises, and ongoing evaluation to ensure readiness and interoperability across missions. These measures aim to improve patient outcomes through reinforcing consistency across UN operations.

Looking ahead, the recommendations of the AME Working Group are expected to inform a standardized baseline for both UN-owned and commercially deployed aeromedical evacuation services. A phased approach will include field testing in 2026, further refinement of training and equipment, and broader dissemination across the UN system and beyond.

This milestone reflects the UN’s continued commitment to safeguarding personnel through strengthening the medical support arrangements available to field operations in challenging environments. By harmonizing standards and promoting innovation, the AME Working Group lays a strong foundation for more effective, responsive, and resilient aeromedical evacuation operations worldwide.

The work of the Aeromedical Evacuation Working Group falls within the wider programme, Optimize and standardize the “Chain of Survival”/ Lifesaving Medical Modules Composition, Deployed in Support of UN Field Operations, to enhance UN Peacekeeping Supply Chain Operations system wide, which is funded by the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund.
